+ Faculty do not recognize notification by classmates of your pending absence. Six absences registered without faculty consultation, whether excused or unexcused, will result in an F.
+ Three unexcused absences will lower the semester grade by a half grade, four to five by a full grade.
+ Absences are excused for illness with professional medical written explanation or other proof of treatment; for other excused absences, please refer to the university Attendance Regulations. each project and exploration must be prepared according to the project specifications. Assignments are due at the beginning of class and must be cleanly comped and ready for presentation. Projects will not be regraded based upon these revisions but extensive revisions will be considered in the final grade.Īll stages of each assignment are expected to be completed on time - the more developed your ideas and form are in class, the more feedback can be offered. Note: Students are encouraged to continue revising projects after each project is graded. Participation is mandatory so be sure to sign up for the account when you receive the invitation. We will use this blog for assignments, explorations, discussions and finals of projects. Access to the blog will be limited to members only so be sure to log in properly each time you access it. This is the studio blog. Invitations to join the blog will be sent out during our first class. Classroom exercises are graded pass/fail. In addition to the two major projects, students will take part in in-studio design explorations and mini-workshops. The final phase requires detailed refinements for a final course critique (Dec 01 or TBD). The next phase asks you to refine these explorations into a comprehensive system. 06) the next phase asks you to work through grid and typographic hierarchy development, content structure, and navigation in dynamic and static media that maximizes flexibility, navigability, and hierarchical clarity for readers (Oct.20-dynamic, Nov. 29) a discovery and play phase includes choosing a subject matter, gathering text and images, and ideating (Oct. Project 02 is divided into five phases to include: an analysis of an existing typographic system (Sept. Project 01 is divided into two phases to include: an exploration of the modular grid system (Sept.01) developing a type-system that is manifested in a type specimen poster. Project 01 explores designing type systems while Project 02 explores type responding to hierarchy and grid systems. The semester is divided into two larger projects. + AIGA Designing for Devices Resource List + The Complete Manual of Typography: A Guide to Setting Perfect Type - Jim Felici + The Elements of Typographic Style - Robert Bringhurst + Grid Systems in Graphic Design: A Visual Communication Manual for Graphic Designers, Typographers and Three Dimensional Designers - Josef Müller-Brockman + Grid Systems: Principles of Organizing Type (Design Briefs)-Kimberly Elam + Lettering and Type: Creating and Designing Typefaces - Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals + Typography (Graphic Design in Context) - Denise Gonzales Crisp + Consider typography and typographic hierarchy when delivered within static and dynamic media + Practice traditions of historically-defined grid design, text aesthetics, and the formal systems in type design + Learn and apply typographic variables in order to maximize design flexibility and expression + Improve technique in the design of extended formal and structural systems. + Learn to design typography within various reading spaces for different kinds of reading, in static and dynamic media Increasingly complex typographic systems are implemented in three-dimensional, sequential page or time-based projects. Through a focused series, students explore how typography behaves across media. This course develops and extends basic vocabulary and understanding to more complex problems that address typographic hierarchy, context, sequence and gestalt.
